Dr. Herbert Gleiter, Honorary Adviser, Founder and Former Director, Distinguished Senior Fellow, Institute of Nanotechnology, Research Center Karlsruhe, KIT - Campus Nord, Germany; Director & Chair Professor, Herbert Gleiter Institute of Nanoscience Nanjing, China
Herbert Gleiter received his Ph.D. in Physics. In 1973, Gleiter became Chair Professor of Materials Science and founded in 1988 today’s Leibniz Institute of New Materials at Saarbruecken, Germany. In 1994, he was appointed Member of the Executive Board of the Research Center Karlsruhe, Germany, and 4 years later he became the Founding Director of the Center’s Institute of Nanotechnology. In 2012 the University of Nanjing founded the “Herbert Gleiter Institute of Nanoscience” and appointed him as the Institute’s Founding Director. Prof. Gleiter’s received more than 40 prizes, seven universities awarded him honorary doctorates. He is a Member of 12 National Academies.of Science and/or Engineering. In the late 70’s he opened the way to a new kind of materials, called today nano-crystalline materials and more recently, he initiated the new field of nano-glasses. It is the attractive perspective of these nano-glasses that they have the potential toprovide the basis a new world of glass based technologies.

Richard De La Rue retired from a full-time professorial position at the University of Glasgow in September 2010 and joined the Photonics Research Centre at the University of Malaya in April 2011, as Visiting Professor. Glasgow - and completed his tenure in July 2014. He also spent two months, in late 2011, at City University Hong Kong, as Kan Tong Po Visiting Professor.

His research has been particularly concerned with photonic crystal and photonic wire structures, waveguide micro-cavities, silicon photonics, metamaterials and graphene (oxide) photonics. His work has also included research on compact lasers, photonic crystal LEDs and the applications of photonic crystal structures and metamaterial surfaces to bio-medical and organic sensing. He has published more than 290 articles as papers in journals, magazines and book chapters. He has also given a large number of conference presentations, many of which were invited, keynote or plenary presentations. Most of his recent publications are listed at:

He co-edited the book: Mikhail Limonov and Richard De La Rue, ‘Optical properties of photonic structures: interplay of order and disorder’, CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group, ISBN-13: 978-1439871911 was published in 2012. A second book, co-edited with Jean-Michel Lourtioz and Siyuan Yu and entitled, ‘Compact Semiconductor Lasers’, was published by Wiley in April 2014. He is a distinctly
junior co-editor of the recently published book: Arti Agrawal et al. ‘Recent Trends in Computational Photonics’, published by Springer Nature. He has been co-editor of the Journal of the European Optical Society: Rapid Publications (JEOS: RP).
He is Fellow of the European Optical Society (EOS); Fellow of the IEEE; Fellow of the OSA; Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering ; Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET) .

Introduction to Potsdam

Potsdam is the capital and largest city of the German federal state of Brandenburg. It directly borders the German capital, Berlin, and is part of the Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region. It is situated on the River Havel 24 kilometres (15 miles) southwest of Berlin's city centre. Around the city there are a series of interconnected lakes and cultural landmarks, in particular the parks and palaces of Sanssouci, the largest World Heritage Site in Germany. Potsdam is a university town, there are also several research foundations, including Fraunhofer Institutes for Applied Polymer Research and Biomedical Engineering, Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute), and Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces etc.
